Marvin grew up in High Prairie, Alberta. Prior to moving to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta, Marvin was a truck driver and rancher. In 1978 he graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction. In 1981, after completing his LLB, Marvin moved to Barrhead to begin his legal career. He articled with the law firm of MacCallum and Ritter. In 1982, he was the first lawyer admitted to the bar at the Barrhead Courthouse. In addition to practicing law, Marvin farmed and raised cattle for 25 years.

Marvin has experience in a wide variety of practice areas, although he now focuses primarily on corporate, real estate, and wills and estates.

In his spare time, Marvin appreciates a good game of golf, and was previously an avid hockey player. He has enjoyed contributing to local volunteer organizations such as the Rotary Club of Barrhead, the Wildrose Rodeo Association and the Blue Heron Support Services Association, but now looks forward to a long-awaited gradual retirement
